Orkney’s history is heavily influenced by the Norse Vikings who took the islands in the ninth century. However, evidence of settlement stretching back thousands of years is present to this day. Neolithic Orcadians have left their mark in the form of stone circles and other archaeological delights.
The Neolithic settlement at Skara Brae is just one fine example of Orkney’s rich history and is so well preserved that people come from all over the world to visit it.
Throughout the Iron Age (1200–800 BC), metal goods were being crafted in Orkney. The metal artefacts at Minehowe in Tankerness are considered one of the best collections of Iron Age metalworking in Britain.
