| Qualifying criteria | Non-EEA nationals who wish to apply must:
Full details of the scheme are available from Border and Immigration Agency. A full list of recognised and listed UK further and higher education institutions is available from the Department for Education and Skills. |
| Permitted work | There are no restrictions on the type of paid work an IGS participant can do. |
| Who applies where? |
Eligible applicants may either switch in-country from student status (if they have extant leave as a student) or return to the UK from abroad no later than one year after they completed their course. Entry clearance is mandatory for those returning to the UK under the scheme. The IGS application form for in-country and overseas applicants is available on theBorder and Immigration Agency website |
| Duration of leave | 12 months |
| Extending the leave | There is no provision in the immigration rules for an extension. |
| Applying for settlement | IGS itself does not lead to settlement. However, as long as participants have extant leave as IGS participants, they will be eligible to switch in-country into employment and self-employment categories (work permit employment, Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, business persons or Innovators), providing they meet the requirements of the category. These categories may then lead to settlement. |
|
Switch back into student visa? |
From 1 September 2007 those on an IGS visa can switch back into a student category visa after their 12 months has expired. If the original IGS application was made in the UK then applicants can switch into the student category without leaving. If, however, the original IGS application was made from outwith the UK then the applicant may have to apply from their country of origin. |
| Family and dependents | Dependants may be permitted to accompany the applicant if there is evidence of sufficient funds available for their accommodation and maintenance. |
| Cost of application | See charges and fees |
