Opticians are to be found on every high street and do provide NHS treatment.

Eyesight tests are free to some people, including children, and a standard NHS eyesight test charge for adults is £18.39 – although a test done by the same optician privately may sometimes be cheaper.

The best advice is to ask different opticians how much it will cost for an eye test. This should help you find the cheapest price.

An optometrist detecting any problems requiring investigation or treatment would direct clients to their GP – who may refer them on to an eye hospital or clinic.
