Highland Language School
A move to Inverness from the Czech Republic in 2007 following an Erasmus Exchange Programme has led 25-year-old Pavla Sykorova to start her own business, Highland Language School, teaching English from a variety of native languages. At the moment she is working voluntarily with Bangladeshi and Polish clients via eucation group in the city.
Pavla said, "I feel fortunate at the moment to be building a client base having been involved with work interpreting at the hospital here in Inverness as well as being asked to interpret at court by local interpreting company.
"My vision for the Highland Language School is to offer a service helping newcomers to the Inverness area who want to improve their English language skills or just get to know the basics ."
Help to launch this business came from the Highland and Island Enterprise, as possibility to attend the Business Start up Course, as well as the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust, who also awarded Pavla with a grant and continue their assistance with advice and aftercare.
Pavla received financial assistance from the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. PSYBT continue to support the business with their aftercare programme.
Pavla taught in Prague for a year before settling in the Highlands with her partner. She said, "I am finding that Inverness is becoming increasingly multi-cultural. This diversity is a testament to what the city has to offer but for some it can be a struggle when English is not their first language. This is where my business steps in and helps out".
"At this early stage in my business I have been in contact with education groups who gave me the opportunity to assist in teaching as well as attend ESOL workshops here in the city. This helps to develop my own skills and also identify groups and individuals who may benefit from a language school."
David Knight Regional Manager for PSYBT says, "Pavla is just one of the many examples of where PSYBT and partner agencies can assist young people to create a venture from otherwise under-utilised skills and qualifications to benefit the Highland economy."
On a more personal level Pavla says;
" What I enjoy most about Scotland is the interesting history,culture,and environment.It is a big challange to live abroad and I enjoy learning new skills,meeting new people,and exploring nice places."
