Dumfries is known as ‘Queen of the South’, a name it shares with its well-known football team.
Dumfries, like most areas in the south of Scotland, has a long and bloody history of battles taking place with England. It was also the scene of horrific witch trials in the 17th century, with those deemed guilty being burned to death. The town has a direct association with Robert the Bruce, who murdered his rival for the Scottish throne in Dumfries in 1306.
